Saturday Morning

cloudy, gray day. fall is on the way. Kathy woke yesterday with a swollen, painful jaw. Had an emergency root canal. A day to forget, eh? My work life crazy, and frankly depressing. Work all the time and fall behind, with visions of future disasters due to deliverables not made to fit the schedule. Sheesh. what a blot on a weekend. Pandora is cool. I sit at computer and check out learning German, BMW motorcycles, Face Book, Yahoo News.....wasting time or exploring the many possibilities of life? Need to make more effort to connect with friends, family. Make some calls. Get off my ass. go shave, get it moving. The shit is piling up around me. Too much attachment to stuff: house, cars, stuff...it all needs time and attention. Trying to get gutters replaced on the house, hire a fence company, old Honda falling apart but we love it, got to plan a fishing trip to Cle Elum, so much time on a weekend and it will go fast. "here comes the sun....and I say it's all right.." there we go. damn Beatles, they said it all, didn't they?

Wednesday evening, 6/29/11

Geri Andrus has arrived to join us on the trip to Yellowstone. Tomorrow night the three of us fly Horizon to Bozeman MT. Spend the night at Best Western then drive to Canyon Visitor Center in Yellowstone where we will meet up with Gary Stacy and Virginia. She's 84 and never been to Yellowstone. She and Gary flew today to Rapid City. They will drive to Mt. Rushmore tomorrow and then drive to Yellowstone to meet us. All staying at some lodge in West Yellowstone. A mini family reunion over the 4th July weekend in Yellowstone. weather.com forecast is good.

I recently figured out Skype setting "To Go" and can now call Lauren in Berlin from any telephone via Skype. Cool.

Big project at work is dead stop due to shitty carpet and provider reluctant to make it right. what a shame. no honor.

Had lunch at Metropolitan Grill with Kevin Kenyon and Jane Louie today for his birthday. quite pleasant. 1/2 roast beef sandwich and a salad. place was busy and it's not cheap. what recession?

Saturday June 11, 2011

Motorcycle shopping maybe today after getting a haircut. Gray skies, but no rain, and temps in 60's. That is what passes for good weather here in the Deep Gray and Cool. Don't whine to me about your high temps.

Peas in the garden have leaped out of the ground in last week. I'll build up the mounds around my potatoes today. Somewhat surprising the satisfaction of growing a staple like a potato. Bring on the total social collapse, we can feed ourselves! ha ha...better get a shotgun first, though.

What's with these public figures, like Anthony Wiener, who work hard to become prominent and then do stupid things? Impulse control is so hard, I guess.

Reading a biography of Walter Winchell, speaking of prominent people, but in his case almost totally forgotten anymore. What a frantic, striving life he led but there's not much in his story so far that makes look like a happy life (if such is possible).

Lauren off to Poland for the weekend, we think. Her apartment has no internet, contrary to the website advert, so we are not quite as in touch with her as usual.

June 9, 2010

still light at 8:40 p.m. I'm on the computer listening to Les Bres in A Minor by the Allman Brothers. Quite surprising jazzy rock item with no vocals. Left on the computer by my boy Seth. A little gift five years after he left us. I love you, son.

had Pagliacci Agog pizza for dinner and a nice glass of red Chianti.

went to Vino Veritas on Capitol Hill last night with Lisa Miner, Will from Club 40, and Amy Eaton for a tasting. Got to pour remnants in a jar, eat some cheese, and sample everything from a sparkling to white to red to a port.

Work is work. Busy all the time. Right now we're stymied with a carpet problem, but we'll get that fixed and move on to Phase 2 remodeling 14 floors of a high rise.

plan to ride the motorcycle tomorrow. got an early doctor thing at 7:15. keep cruising the web looking at motorcycles and keep coming back to the $20,000 BMW R1200rt. hate to spend it, but if I don't buy something soon I'll be too old. have to go to Ural with a side car! lol....actually I'd like one of those, also.

Now I'm on "mountain jam" and it runs for 33 minutes! Seth knew the music of my generation better than I do.

Lauren is in Berlin working as an intern for the summer for US government. wonder if she is being scouted for the CIA? smart, multiple languages, enjoys travel, etc. We are going to visit her at end of July.

first we have to go to Yellowstone to meet Granny, Gary, Geri for a family get together. Granny will see Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone for the first time at age 84 or whatever she is.

okay, no burn out, maybe I'll be back with a year going by.

Holidays

Lauren home, or at least in the Northwest. Today she's gone to Portland or Eugene. Last week she was here with Eric, her boyfriend. He's a Phd student in Organic Chemistry at U of Oregon. They were here for New Year's. Lowell & Carol were over on New Year's day. We had champagne and caviar, and then went to Snappy Dragon for dinner. Lauren and Eric came and joined us.

The next night we went to Ciao Bella over near U Village. We had a coupon, from friends Eric & Rebecca, so it was a pretty good meal. The food was excellent and all but free!

Lauren came west on 12/16, arriving at 11 p.m. The next morning at 4:30 I had her back at SeaTac so she could go to Oahu to meet Eric, Danielle and D's boyfriend, Caulden. The boys were attending a chemistry conference. All of them went out on a charter boat to deep sea fish. The photos show a nice adventure with a pony-tailed Hawaiian who cut up some sushi on the boat, and some large fish!

She came home from mostly sunny Hawaii, there was some rain, and off we went with her to Sleeping Lady at Leavenworth the next day....where it was in the '20's and snow was deep on the ground. This year we got lucky and found a nice tree in a pot at the Safeway. So, for the fourth year we spent a few days in cabin with no TV and lots of time to relax. We played Monopoly and Lauren slaughtered us! She's always good company and we treasure the time with our bright, hard working, charming, sweet girl.

So, everyone, when you are having a good time at this time of year, take a few minutes to think of those you have loved who are not here for the New Year and remember how they brightened the holidays in years past. Grandma Ruby, Aunt June, JW, Aunt Joy, I miss you. There are others, but let's not over do the sentiment but let's also not be too cool. Tempis fugit, carpe diem. Love to all.
